Joinery manufacturing

Where the previous page describes the manufacturing story for homeowners, this one is written for the professionals who commission and coordinate joinery as part of a wider project — architects, interior designers, developers, builders and project managers who need to understand joinery manufacture in the terms they already use for procurement and programme.

At this stage the project has moved past design and specification and become a manufacturing exercise: a schedule of components, each with a defined size, material, edge treatment and hardware requirement, that has to be produced accurately and delivered in a sequence that matches site progress.

From specification to components

    Component schedules

    The approved specification is broken down into a schedule of individual components, each recorded with its size, material, edge treatment and hardware, giving a clear list against which manufacturing can be tracked.

    Carcasses and, where the design calls for them, face frames are constructed to the dimensions and jointing method recorded in the schedule, forming the structural basis of each unit.

Reading the specification as a schedule

Once a specification has been approved, it is converted into a component schedule: a structured list of every carcass, panel, door and piece of hardware required, each cross-referenced to its position in the room. This schedule becomes the working document for the manufacturing stage.

Structural manufacture: carcasses and face frames

Carcass construction follows the jointing method and dimensions set out in the schedule. Where a design includes face frames, these are built to the same reference, establishing the openings that doors and drawers will later be fitted into.

For multi-room or phased projects, coordinated at /multi-room-bespoke-furniture or /bespoke-joinery-packages, carcasses are grouped and produced by room or phase so that delivery can follow the agreed sequence rather than being produced as a single undifferentiated batch.

Panels, doors and edge treatment

Doors, drawer fronts and panels are produced to the sizes and reveals recorded in the schedule. Exposed edges are treated to match the specified material, whether that involves a lipped edge, an applied edge band or a solid edge detail, so that appearance is consistent across the run.

Hardware, dry assembly and protection

Hardware specified for the project — hinges, runners, catches and fixings — is prepared and, where practical, pre-fitted in the workshop, so that on-site work is reduced to final adjustment rather than first fitting.

Components may be dry-assembled to confirm fit and alignment before being broken down again, protected and packed for delivery. This step reduces the risk of a fitting issue being discovered only once components are on site.

Sequencing deliverables by room

Where a project covers multiple rooms or a phased build, components are sequenced for delivery to match the site programme, so that joinery for a given room arrives when that room is ready to receive it rather than in a single undifferentiated delivery.

This sequencing is agreed with the project team in advance, alongside site access and delivery arrangements, and is coordinated with installation, described at /bespoke-furniture-installation.

On a development or renovation programme where several trades are working in sequence, this coordination reduces the amount of finished joinery held on site waiting to be fitted, and reduces the risk of protected components being damaged before installation begins. Delivery dates are revisited as the programme progresses, rather than fixed once at the start of manufacturing and left unreviewed.

Recording and communicating changes

How do you coordinate manufacturing with our build programme?
Component schedules are sequenced against the build programme agreed with the project team, so that joinery for a given room or phase is produced and delivered to match site readiness rather than arriving before a room can receive it. Any change to the wider build programme is discussed as it happens, so the manufacturing sequence and delivery dates can be adjusted accordingly, and the schedule remains a reliable reference for everyone coordinating the project.
Can you work from our own specification document?
A specification produced by an architect or designer is used as the basis for the component schedule and manufacturing drawings, provided it includes the dimensional and material detail needed to manufacture accurately. Where the specification is incomplete in places, such as a missing hardware reference or an ambiguous junction, this is raised and resolved with the project team before manufacturing begins, so that the schedule is not built on an assumption.

What is a component schedule and why is it produced?
A component schedule is a structured list of every carcass, panel, door and item of hardware required for a project, each cross-referenced to its position in the room and its material and finish. Do you dry-assemble joinery before delivery?

Materials & finishes

How do you keep edge treatment consistent across a large schedule?
Edge treatment is specified once for each material in the schedule and applied consistently across every component of that type, whether that is a lipped edge, an applied edge band or a solid edge detail, so that a run of doors or panels reads as a single scheme rather than varying piece by piece across a project with many components.
Can hardware be pre-fitted before delivery?
Hinges, runners and fixings specified for the project are prepared and pre-fitted where practical in the workshop, so that doors and drawers are already close to their final adjustment before delivery. This reduces the amount of first fitting required on site and generally speeds up final installation, though a degree of adjustment on site is still normal once furniture is fixed into an actual room.

How are components protected during delivery?

How far in advance do you need the specification confirmed?

The lead time this requires varies by project and is agreed as part of the overall project programme, so that manufacturing can be scheduled with confidence rather than started against information that may still change.
Can manufacturing be phased alongside a staged handover?

Do you manufacture for developers as well as individual homeowners?
