Installing your finished furniture
Installation is where manufactured components are delivered, fitted and finished into the room they were designed for, carried out by the same Chester Thomas team who built them in the workshop.
Installation
Once components have left the workshop, installation is the stage that turns a set of manufactured pieces into a finished room. It covers everything from preparing the site to receive the furniture through to fitting, adjustment and a final clean, and is carried out by the same team responsible for manufacturing described at /bespoke-furniture-manufacturing.
Every room presents its own conditions: walls, floors and ceilings are rarely perfectly true, and installation has to accommodate that reality while achieving the fit and finish shown in the approved drawings. This page sets out what that involves in practice.
It also sets a clear boundary. Chester Thomas manufactures, delivers and fits bespoke furniture and joinery, but does not carry out electrical, plumbing or gas work. Where a project needs specialist works of that kind, they may require appropriate trades, coordinated as part of the wider project.
Installation follows manufacturing in the sequence described at the process page, and is the final visible stage of a project before handover.

Site preparation
Before delivery, the room is checked to confirm it is ready to receive the furniture, including access routes and any final dimensions that could affect fitting on the day.

Delivery and access
Manufactured components are delivered to site and brought into the room, with access arrangements planned in advance for larger or more complex pieces of furniture.

Fitting
Carcasses, frames and panels are fixed into position, doors and drawers are hung, and hardware is adjusted so that everything operates as intended within the finished room.

Alignment and levelling
Furniture is aligned and levelled on site to suit the actual conditions of the room, since floors, walls and ceilings are rarely perfectly true even in a well-built home.

Scribing to walls, floors and ceilings
Where furniture meets an existing wall, floor or ceiling, edges are scribed to follow the actual line of the room, closing any gap that would otherwise be visible.

Final adjustment and clean finish
Doors, drawers and any moving parts are given a final adjustment, surfaces are checked and protected packaging is removed, leaving the room clean and ready to use.
Preparing the site and delivering the furniture
Before delivery, the room is checked to confirm access and readiness, particularly for larger pieces of furniture that need to be brought through doorways, stairwells or lifts. Any last-minute site condition that could affect fitting is raised in advance where possible, rather than discovered on the day.
Delivery is timed to match the installation programme agreed earlier in the project, so that components arrive when the room is genuinely ready for them rather than sitting on site awaiting fitting.
For larger deliveries, arrangements such as parking and a clear route into the property are agreed beforehand, so that the delivery itself does not become the point at which the installation programme first slips.
Fitting, alignment and scribing
Once on site, carcasses and frames are fixed into position, with doors, drawers and panels fitted and hardware adjusted so that everything operates correctly. Alignment and levelling account for the actual condition of the room, since floors, walls and ceilings are rarely perfectly true.
Where furniture meets a wall, floor or ceiling, edges are scribed to follow the real line of the room. This closes gaps that would otherwise appear where a straight factory edge met an uneven surface, and is one of the details that distinguishes fitted furniture from a freestanding piece.
Integrated elements and the boundary with other trades
Some projects include elements that need to be coordinated with other trades, such as lighting within a media wall or plumbing connections in a kitchen or utility run. Chester Thomas fits the furniture and any specified integration points, but does not carry out electrical, plumbing or gas work itself.
Where specialist works of this kind are needed, they may require appropriate trades depending on the project, and this is agreed and coordinated as part of the installation programme rather than assumed to be included.
Final adjustment and finished appearance
Once fitted, doors, drawers and any moving parts are given a final adjustment so that they close and operate smoothly. Surfaces are checked against the specification agreed at /bespoke-furniture-materials-finishes, and any protective packaging used during delivery is removed.
The aim is a finished appearance consistent with the approved drawings: consistent reveals, aligned doors and a fit to the room that reads as intentional rather than adapted.
Leaving the room clean
Installation concludes with the room left clean, with packaging and offcuts removed and the finished furniture ready to use. Any final points are discussed with you on site before the team leaves.
This final visit is also the point at which you can raise anything that looks or operates differently from what was expected, so that it can be addressed while the installation team is still on site rather than reported separately afterwards.
Coordinating with other trades and building work
On projects that involve other trades, such as a wider renovation or a new-build finish, installation is scheduled with reference to what else is happening on site. Decorating, flooring and other finishing work is generally sequenced either side of furniture installation, so that the furniture is not damaged by later trades and does not hold up work that needs to follow it.
For projects coordinated with builders or on a renovation programme, this scheduling is agreed with your project team in advance, described further at /bespoke-furniture-for-builders and /bespoke-joinery-for-renovation-projects, so that installation dates are realistic against the wider build programme rather than fixed independently of it.
Where a project runs across several rooms with different trades finishing at different times, keeping installation dates under review, rather than fixed months in advance and never revisited, avoids furniture being scheduled into a room that is not yet genuinely ready for it.

Working together
- Do we need to be present during installation?
- Being present is not essential, since the installation team works from the same approved drawings and specification used throughout the project, but many clients like to be available at the start and end of installation to discuss access on the day and see the finished result before the team leaves. Your point of contact at Chester Thomas will agree what works best for your household in advance, including whether keys, alarm codes or other access arrangements need to be organised for days when nobody is at home.
- How long does installation take?
- Installation time depends on the scope of the project, the number of rooms involved and the complexity of the fitting and scribing required, so it is discussed and agreed as part of your overall project programme rather than fixed in general terms that would not reflect your particular furniture. A realistic timeframe is set out once manufacturing is complete and a delivery date has been confirmed, giving you a clear expectation of when the room will be finished and ready to use.
Design & drawings
- What happens if the room doesn't match the drawings exactly?
- Rooms are rarely perfectly true even when built well, which is why installation includes alignment, levelling and scribing to the actual conditions found on site rather than an assumption that the room matches the drawing precisely. Any significant discrepancy between the room and the approved drawings is raised and discussed before fitting continues, so that a decision about how to proceed is made with you rather than worked around silently on the day.
Materials & finishes
- Will the finish look the same once installed as it did in the workshop?
- Finishes are applied and checked in the workshop under consistent lighting and conditions, and are inspected again once components are installed in the finished room. Site lighting, whether natural daylight or a room's fitted lighting scheme, can make a finish appear slightly different from how it looked under workshop lighting, which is a normal part of seeing furniture in its finished setting rather than a sign that anything has changed about the material itself.
Manufacture & installation
- What is scribing and why does it matter?
- Scribing is the process of shaping an edge of furniture on site so that it follows the actual line of an adjoining wall, floor or ceiling, which are rarely perfectly straight even in a well-built home. Without scribing, a straight factory edge meeting an uneven surface would leave a visible gap along the join. Scribing closes that gap and is one of the details that distinguishes fitted furniture, built into a room, from a freestanding piece simply placed against a wall.
- Do you handle the electrics for lighting inside our furniture?
- Chester Thomas fits the furniture itself and prepares any specified integration points, such as a recess or cable route for lighting, but does not carry out electrical work. Where lighting or other electrical elements are needed within a piece of fitted furniture, this may require an appropriate qualified electrician, coordinated as part of the wider installation programme rather than assumed to be included in the furniture fitting itself.
- Can you connect plumbing for a kitchen or utility unit?
- Plumbing connections, such as fitting a sink, tap or appliance that requires a water supply, are not carried out by Chester Thomas. Where a project includes sinks, taps or other plumbed elements, these may require an appropriate trade depending on the project, coordinated alongside the furniture installation so that the cabinetry is ready to receive the fitting once the plumbing work is complete.
- What happens to packaging and offcuts after installation?
- Packaging used to protect components during delivery, along with any offcuts generated during final fitting and adjustment, is removed by the installation team as part of finishing the job. The intention is that the room is left clean and genuinely ready to use once the work is complete, rather than requiring you to clear materials or debris after the team has left the site.
- Do the same people who made our furniture also install it?
- Installation is carried out by the Chester Thomas team, the same people responsible for manufacturing described at /bespoke-furniture-manufacturing, which means they understand the furniture's construction, materials and hardware before they begin fitting it. This continuity is useful when a room presents an unexpected condition, since the installer can respond directly to it rather than referring the question back to a separate manufacturing team who were not involved in the original build.
Programme
- How is installation scheduled around other trades on site?
- Installation is scheduled with the wider project programme in mind, particularly where other trades such as decorators, electricians or flooring contractors need to complete work before or after furniture is fitted. This is agreed with you or your project team in advance, so that installation takes place once the room is at the right stage to receive it and does not conflict with other work planned around the same dates.
- What if our site isn't ready on the planned installation date?
- If a site is not ready on the planned date, installation is rescheduled in discussion with you, since furniture is fitted once the room can genuinely receive it rather than delivered regardless of site conditions. Delivery and installation dates are agreed again once readiness is confirmed, and finished components are held securely in the workshop in the meantime rather than left on an unfinished site.
- Can installation be phased across multiple rooms?
- For larger projects, installation can be phased by room, following the same sequencing used for manufacturing and delivery, so that each room is completed in an order that matches the wider site programme rather than all rooms being attempted simultaneously. This phased approach is agreed with you in advance and can be adjusted if the site programme changes as the project progresses.

- What determines the cost of installation?
- Installation cost depends on factors such as the scope of the project, the number of rooms, access conditions, the complexity of scribing and alignment required, and any coordination needed with other trades. Because these factors vary considerably from one project to another, figures are not published in general terms; the practical way to understand what installation would involve for your project is to contact the contact page and discuss the rooms and access involved.

- What should we do to prepare our home before installation day?
- Clearing access to the room, moving items out of the way, and confirming that any preceding building or decorating work is complete will help installation go smoothly, since furniture is generally fitted once a room is otherwise finished. Specific preparation points relevant to your project, such as protecting flooring or arranging parking for delivery, are agreed with you ahead of the installation date.
