Bespoke joinery design: fitted furniture as architectural joinery

Fitted furniture behaves like architectural joinery once it is built into a room. This page sets out the technical decisions that make a design fit correctly: tolerances, spans, configuration and material behaviour.

Joinery design

Fitted furniture is not free-standing. Once it is built into a room, it takes on the character of joinery: it must relate to walls, ceilings and floors that are rarely perfectly square, carry loads across defined spans, and accommodate services and lighting that pass through or behind it. Designing it well means treating it as a technical discipline, not only a visual one.

This page is about the decisions made within that process once a layout starts to become fitted joinery: how dimensions, tolerances and material behaviour are worked out so the finished piece performs correctly on site.

The considerations below apply across kitchens, wardrobes, media walls, home offices and general cabinetry, wherever furniture is fitted directly into the fabric of a room rather than standing free of it, and they hold regardless of the size or style of the project involved.

Getting these decisions right at design stage matters because fitted joinery is difficult to adjust once it is built. A carcass cut to the wrong tolerance, or a shelf spanning further than its material can comfortably bear, shows itself only once the piece is loaded and in daily use, by which point correcting it means remaking rather than adjusting. Working through these questions properly before manufacture is what allows a finished piece to still perform correctly years after installation.

    Fitted joinery meets walls, ceilings and floors along its full length, so the relationship between the carcass and those surfaces has to be worked out in detail, including where scribe or filler pieces will absorb any variation between the drawn dimension and the real room.

    Unsupported spans in carcasses and shelving are set with the loads they will carry in mind, so shelves do not deflect over time and carcasses remain rigid across their full width, even once fully loaded with books, crockery or clothing.

    Where sockets, switches, cabling or lighting need to pass through or sit behind fitted joinery, routes and access points are planned at design stage, with any specialist electrical work carried out by an appropriately qualified trade rather than as part of the joinery itself.

Reading the room as a structure

Before storage or finish is considered, joinery design starts by reading the room as a structure: where walls are out of square, where the ceiling drops or steps, where the floor is uneven, and where services already run behind the surfaces the furniture will meet. These are not visual observations but dimensional facts that shape how the joinery is built.

Tolerances are set from this information. A carcass that ignores a wall's true dimensions will show a gap or a tight seam once installed; one designed with the correct tolerance can be scribed or packed to close that gap without compromising the line of the piece, so the finished run appears continuous and deliberate.

Sizing storage correctly

Storage sizing is a dimensional exercise as much as a functional one. Internal compartments, shelf depths and drawer heights are set against what they need to hold, but also against the spans that shelving material can carry without support, and the practical sizes at which doors and drawers operate well over years of use.

Getting this wrong shows up over time rather than immediately: a shelf that looks fine when empty can sag once loaded, and a drawer sized without regard to its runner's limits can bind. Joinery design works these limits out in advance, before manufacture commits the piece to a fixed set of dimensions.

Material behaviour

Materials for fitted joinery are chosen partly for how they behave once installed, not only for appearance. This includes how a material moves with changes in humidity and temperature, how it takes the finish specified for it, and how it performs across the spans and configurations set out in the design.

This behaviour is considered alongside the aesthetic material direction set during the wider design service, so appearance and performance are resolved together rather than one being fixed before the other is considered, which can lead to compromises further into the project.

Manufacturing detail

Joinery design ends with manufacturing detail: the precise dimensions, joints, panel arrangements and hardware positions that the workshop needs to build the piece. This detail is what makes the difference between a design that looks resolved on paper and one that goes together correctly in the workshop and on site.

Where specialist works such as electrical connections are required alongside the joinery, these are noted for appropriate trades rather than undertaken as part of the joinery design itself, keeping responsibility for each element of the project clear.

Confirming dimensions before cutting begins

The dimensions used during joinery design are drawn from the site survey carried out earlier in the design process, but they are checked again before manufacture proceeds. Rooms can move slightly during the course of a project, particularly where other building work is happening alongside it, and a short re-check protects the tolerances that have already been worked out.

It is the discipline that turns a design into something that will fit and perform correctly once installed.
How do you deal with walls that are not straight?
Out-of-square walls are common in most homes, and joinery design accounts for them by building appropriate tolerance into the carcass dimensions and planning scribe or packer pieces where needed. This is worked out before manufacture, so the finished run reads as straight and continuous even where the wall behind it is not. The degree of tolerance allowed depends on how far out of square the wall is found to be during the site survey, so more generous allowances are built in wherever the room demands them.
What is a tolerance in this context?
A tolerance is the deliberate allowance built into a dimension to account for real-world variation, such as an uneven wall or a slightly out-of-level floor. Setting tolerances correctly at design stage means doors, drawers and carcasses fit and operate as intended once installed, rather than needing correction after the fact on site. Too little tolerance risks a piece that will not fit; too much leaves visible gaps, so the allowance is judged against the specific dimensions recorded for that room rather than applied as a single standard figure across every project.

Where a wider span is wanted for appearance, additional support such as a stiffened edge or a discreet intermediate divide can be designed in, so the look that is wanted does not come at the cost of long-term performance.

Are electrical or lighting works part of joinery design?
Joinery design plans the routes and access points needed for sockets, switches, cabling or lighting that pass through or sit behind fitted furniture, but the electrical work itself is carried out by an appropriately qualified trade. Chester Thomas does not undertake electrical, plumbing or gas work directly as part of any project. Where this coordination is needed, positions and access points are agreed early enough that the joinery can be manufactured with the correct cut-outs, rather than adapted on site after the furniture has already arrived.

The two run alongside each other throughout the project. Material behaviour, such as how a piece will move or take a finish, is considered as part of the joinery design, while the formal confirmation of materials and finishes happens at the specification stage described on /bespoke-furniture-specification. Treating them separately in this way means a material is never locked in before its practical behaviour within the design has been properly thought through.

Can joinery design accommodate awkward rooms?
This is much of the reason the discipline exists in the first place. Sloped ceilings, chimney breasts, alcoves and uneven walls are dimensional problems that joinery design is specifically set up to resolve, rather than complications discovered after manufacture has already started on a piece. Each is treated as part of the room's architecture to be worked with, using tolerance, scribes and considered proportion, so the finished piece reads as though it was always meant to sit exactly where it does.

This depends on the complexity of the room and the furniture involved, including how many awkward features need resolving and how quickly material and configuration decisions are confirmed. We do not give a fixed timeframe without reviewing the project, since every room and brief presents a different set of decisions, and a straightforward run of cabinetry will move through this stage more quickly than a room with several awkward features to resolve.

There is no separate fixed fee for joinery design in isolation; it forms part of the wider project cost, which depends on scope, number of rooms, dimensions, materials, finishes, hardware, complexity and installation. A project with several awkward architectural features to resolve will typically involve more design time than a straightforward run of cabinetry.
