Bespoke Home Office Desks in Birmingham

Birmingham's Victorian and Edwardian terraces produce a particular kind of home-working space: a box room off the landing, a half-width bedroom, or a stair return widened just enough to take a chair. None of these correspond to a standard desk size, and a shop-bought desk dropped into one of them usually either overhangs the doorway or leaves an awkward gap at one end. We measure the actual room, including door swing and any sloped ceiling from a loft conversion above, and set the desk's dimensions from that survey rather than a catalogue width.

A rear extension or open-plan renovation often creates a different problem: a wide, open space where a desk needs to hold its own visually rather than disappear against a run of kitchen or living-room cabinetry. Where a home office sits within an open-plan extension, we design the desk and any adjoining storage as part of the same scheme as the rest of the joinery, matching materials and proportions so the working area reads as a considered part of the room rather than an afterthought squeezed into a corner once the kitchen was finished.

Chimney breasts and their flanking alcoves are common in Birmingham's older housing stock, and a desk built into one of these alcoves needs individual measurement, since the two sides of a chimney breast are rarely identical in an older house. We survey each alcove separately and build the desk to fit the one it will occupy, rather than assuming symmetry that the property itself does not have. Where a loft conversion has created a new home-working room, we also take account of restricted head height at the eaves when setting desk position and any shelving above it.

Screen position, cable routing and storage are agreed before manufacture rather than worked out on the day of fitting. We plan a route for power and data cabling through the desk carcass, position sockets to suit the desk rather than an existing wall fitting, and build in drawers for stationery and filing, with a housing for a printer where one is wanted. Any new socket or data point is installed by a qualified electrician as part of the wider project.

The finished desk is manufactured in our Derbyshire workshop and installed by the same team who carried out the survey, so a Birmingham home office, whether a converted box room or a corner of a new extension, arrives as one complete piece rather than a desk fitted separately from its storage.
