Bespoke Study Bookcases

A study is a working room first, and any bookcase within it has to answer to that. Reference books, manuals, box files and the material you reach for mid-task all need shelving that is planned around use, not simply arranged for appearance. We start by understanding what you actually keep and how often you reach for it, then set out shelf heights and bays accordingly.

Reference books tend to come in a wide range of sizes — tall atlases and box files sitting beside standard paperbacks — and a single uniform shelf height wastes space on the small volumes while cramping the large ones. We plan mixed shelf heights across a bookcase, with taller bays where needed and closer spacing elsewhere, so the run makes efficient use of the wall rather than being set to the largest book you own.

Adjustable shelving earns its place in a study more than almost anywhere else in the house, because a working collection changes. Files come and go, reference material gets updated, and what sits on a shelf in five years may look nothing like what sits there today. We specify shelf pins and adjustable bays through most of a run, reserving fixed shelving only where a section needs to carry particularly heavy or awkward loads.

Integrated lighting changes how a bookcase functions in a working room. Shelf-edge or top-mounted lighting on its own circuit means titles and files can be read at a glance without relying on general room light, which matters in a study used through darker months or for evening work. We specify a warm, accurate colour temperature so the lighting is comfortable to work under rather than simply decorative.

Display still has a place. A bookcase that holds nothing but reference material and files can feel purely functional, so we usually build in a shelf or two for personal items, awards or photographs, positioned where they add some warmth to the room without interrupting the working shelving around them.

Below the shelving, cabinets rather than open shelves are often the better choice for anything that doesn't need to be seen — spare stationery, old paperwork, or equipment used occasionally. This keeps the visible part of the bookcase tidy and reserves the closed section for the material that would otherwise clutter the room.

Working around a desk is the detail that most distinguishes a study bookcase from one built for a living room. Where the bookcase sits behind, beside or opposite a desk, we plan sightlines, reach and any video-call backdrop together with the desk design, so the finished room reads as one composition rather than two separate pieces of furniture placed in the same space.
