Bookshelves, designed around the room
A bookshelf sounds like the simplest piece of furniture there is, until you try to fit one against a real wall — sloped ceilings, uneven skirtings and doorways rarely leave a straightforward rectangle to work with. Bespoke bookshelves are built to the actual shape of the space, whether that's a single alcove or a full wall.
Shelf spacing is set to suit what you own: taller gaps for oversized art books and box sets, closer spacing for paperbacks, with adjustable shelving used where your collection is likely to keep growing or changing. Weight matters too — timber shelving is specified with enough depth and support to avoid sagging over time.
We can build bookshelves as fitted furniture, scribed into an alcove or against a wall, or as a substantial free-standing piece intended to be moved if you ever relocate. Both are built to the same standard in our workshop; the difference is mainly in how the piece meets the floor, wall and ceiling.
Lighting is worth considering from the outset if the shelving is a feature of the room — vertical LED strips or shelf-edge lighting bring depth to a run of books in a way a single room light rarely achieves.

Every commission begins with a conversation about the room, how it is used and what needs to be stored or shown.
Built for the architecture you already have
- Wall shape and any slope
- Sloped ceilings and irregular walls are surveyed and the shelving is cut to follow them rather than boxed off square.
- Skirting and floor level
- The base of the shelving is scribed to the skirting and any variation in floor level along the run.
- Existing coving or cornice
- Shelving height is set below, or scribed around, any existing coving at ceiling level.
- Weight distribution across the run
- Long runs of shelving are designed with adequate fixing points and support to carry the weight of a full collection.
- Access for reaching higher shelves
- Taller runs are considered alongside how the top shelves will actually be reached, whether by a ladder rail or simply keeping the top for less-used items.
Materials & finishes
Specifications are developed with you during the design stage and sampled before anything is built. Not every option suits every commission, and we will say so where a material is the wrong choice for the room or the use.
Solid oak and oak veneer
A durable choice for shelving expected to carry significant weight; specification agreed once the collection size is known.
Walnut veneer
Used where a darker tone is wanted, often to match existing furniture in a study or living room.
Hand-painted timber
Suits a lighter scheme; colour matched or contrasted with the room during design.
Adjustable shelf pin fittings
Fitted within the carcass so shelf height can be altered without visible damage to the piece.
Integrated LED lighting
Specified where a lit display effect is wanted, run from a concealed transformer.
Brass library rail and ladder fittings
An option for taller runs; agreed at design stage based on the shelving height.
Soft-close cupboard doors
Fitted where a closed base cupboard is included below open shelving.
Designed and built bespoke
We measure the wall or alcove in detail, including any slope or irregularity, then draw the shelving to show spacing, weight support and any lighting before manufacture begins. The shelving is built in our Derbyshire workshop and installed by the same team, scribed to your walls and skirting on site — sized to your books and your room rather than built to a standard shelf-unit width.

- Can shelf spacing vary within the same run?
- Yes, taller gaps can be positioned where oversized books or objects sit, with closer spacing elsewhere, rather than one fixed height throughout. Shelf spacing is set around the actual books and objects you own, since a uniform gap rarely suits a real, growing collection.
- How much weight can fitted bookshelves hold?
- This depends on the material and depth specified; we design the shelving and its support to suit the size of collection you describe to us.
- Can shelving be built to follow a sloped ceiling?
- Yes, shelving is commonly shaped to follow a sloped ceiling in loft or attic rooms, with the top shelf cut to the angle of the roof.
- Is free-standing or fitted shelving better?
- Fitted shelving makes the most of an alcove or awkward space and is scribed to the room; free-standing shelving can be relocated later. We can advise once we know the room and your plans.
- Can you include a library ladder?
- For taller runs, a rail and sliding ladder can be included to make the upper shelves accessible. This is worth deciding early, since it affects the depth of the top shelf and where any fixing points for the rail are positioned.
- Will the shelves sag over time under the weight of books?
- Shelf thickness and support are specified to avoid this, based on the depth of the run and an estimate of what will be stored. A written programme is issued once the design is signed off, covering manufacture in the workshop and the installation dates on site.
- Can bookshelves include a cupboard for other storage?
- Yes, a closed cupboard base is a common addition below open shelving for items you'd rather not display. Shelf spacing is set around the actual books and objects you own, since a uniform gap rarely suits a real, growing collection.
- How do you light bookshelves without it looking like a shop display?
- We use restrained lighting positioned to bring depth to the shelving rather than an even wash, and can discuss brightness and colour temperature during design.
- Can shelving be adjusted later if my collection grows?
- Adjustable shelf fittings allow shelf height to be changed later without altering the carcass itself. Adjustable shelf pins are a straightforward, low-cost specification, so it is usually worth including even if the current plan is for fixed positions.
- Do you build shelving for a home office or study rather than a living room?
- Yes, the same approach applies wherever the shelving sits; a study or office often has different proportions and storage needs, which we discuss with you.
- Can shelving be built around a window?
- Yes, shelving can be designed to run either side of a window or beneath it, depending on the wall and the light in the room.
- What's the best finish for shelving that will be handled often?
- Durable painted or veneered finishes with a robust lacquer are usually recommended for shelving that sees frequent use; we can discuss options during design. We keep the transformer and driver accessible for future maintenance, and colour temperature is agreed at design stage so it matches any existing lighting nearby.
- Can you match new shelving to an existing bookcase we want to keep?
- We can take reference from an existing piece to match finish and proportions as closely as practical. A physical sample is agreed with you before manufacture, since colour and sheen can look different under workshop light than they will in your room.
- Do you fit bookshelves into a stairwell or landing?
- Yes, provided the space and any structural or safety considerations are discussed during the survey. Nothing is manufactured until you have approved these in writing, so you always know exactly what has been agreed before work begins in the workshop.
- Which areas do you build bookshelves for?
- Bookshelves are manufactured at our Coton in the Elms workshop and installed across Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and the West Midlands. Site visits, surveys and installation are carried out in person by our own team rather than a subcontractor, so the same people you speak with at enquiry stage are the ones who fit the finished piece.
