Bespoke furniture built around a fireplace

A fireplace is usually the fixed point a living room is arranged around, which makes furniture placed near it more visible, and more constrained by heat and hearth, than furniture almost anywhere else in the house.

Bespoke furniture around fireplaces

A fireplace tends to sit at the centre of how a room is used, whether or not it is lit regularly, and furniture built around it has to earn its place in a way that furniture along a plain wall does not. It is looked at from every seat in the room, so proportions and finish matter more here than almost anywhere else, and it has to coexist with a hearth, a mantel and often a television or media wall built above or beside the fire itself.

This is a wider question than what to build into the recesses beside a chimney breast, which we cover in detail on our /bespoke-furniture-for-alcoves page. Here the focus is the whole composition: the chimney breast itself, the mantel above it, any television or artwork mounted there, and how storage or seating either side relates to the fire rather than simply filling the gaps around it.

Heat is the obvious constraint. A working fire, wood burner or gas fire generates warmth that has to be kept away from combustible material and from anything that would be damaged by it, which limits how close cabinetry can run and what can be built directly above the mantel. Even where the fireplace is purely decorative, the hearth itself usually projects into the room and has to be worked around.

The reward for getting this right is a wall that reads as a single composition rather than a fireplace with furniture stacked awkwardly beside it. That might mean a media wall built to frame the fire, storage that matches the mantel's proportions, or simply a considered gap left either side so the fireplace keeps its presence in the room.

    Any furniture near a working fireplace needs sufficient clearance from the fire surround, and materials at the closest points need to tolerate sustained warmth. This restricts both the depth of cabinetry nearest the chimney breast and what can be mounted directly above a working mantel.

    Because a fireplace draws the eye from every seating position, furniture built around it is judged more closely on proportion and finish than furniture elsewhere in the room. A slightly uneven gap or mismatched height either side is far more noticeable here than on a plain wall.

Clearance from the fire surround
The design keeps a measured distance between any furniture and the fire surround, based on the fireplace's own specification and use, rather than a single assumed figure applied to every room.
Proportion relative to the chimney breast
Heights, widths and mouldings either side of the fireplace are set in proportion to the chimney breast and mantel, so the whole wall reads as one composition rather than furniture that happens to be nearby.
Television position and viewing angle
Where a screen sits above or beside the fire, its height is set for comfortable viewing from the main seating position, with cabinetry designed to conceal cabling and any equipment rather than leaving it visible.
Working around the hearth
The hearth's exact projection is measured and any furniture base is set back or scribed to it, so the join between stone or tile and cabinetry looks deliberate rather than cut short.
A considered gap either side
Not every fireplace wall needs to be filled edge to edge. Sometimes leaving a measured gap either side of the chimney breast, rather than crowding it with cabinetry, keeps the fireplace as the clear focus of the room.
Ventilation and access to controls
Gas fires and wood burners often have controls, vents or a flue access point that need to remain reachable, and the design checks these are identified before cabinetry is finalised so nothing is later blocked.

Design

How close can bespoke furniture be built to a working fireplace?
The safe clearance depends on the specific fireplace, its fuel type and its manufacturer's guidance, so this is assessed for your fire rather than applied as a single rule. The design keeps furniture at a distance that respects that clearance, adjusting depth and material choice at the closest points accordingly.
Can a television be positioned above the fireplace without looking bolted on?
It can, when the surrounding cabinetry is designed as part of the same composition from the outset, rather than a bracket fitted first with joinery built around it afterwards. Concealing cabling within the cabinetry, aligning the screen with the mantel or chimney breast proportions, and setting the height for comfortable viewing from the main seating position all help the television read as one considered feature rather than an addition bolted onto the wall.
Should furniture fill both sides of the fireplace, or is a gap sometimes better?
This depends on the room and how it is used. In some living rooms a measured gap either side keeps the fireplace itself as the clear focus, particularly where the chimney breast and surround already have real presence. In others, the household wants storage or a media wall extending the fireplace's role along the whole wall. We discuss which suits your room during the design visit rather than assuming a full-width composition is always the right answer.
What happens if the hearth is wider than the chimney breast?
The hearth's actual width and projection are measured on site, since a hearth often extends further into the room than the chimney breast itself. Any furniture built either side is then set back or scribed to follow that projecting edge rather than being cut in a straight line that ignores it, which avoids the abrupt, unfinished-looking junction that a standard rectangular cabinet base would otherwise create against a projecting hearth.
Can existing artwork or a mirror above the mantel be kept in the design?
A mirror, painting or other mantel feature you want to keep can be built into the overall composition rather than treated as an obstacle, provided you tell us about it during the design visit. The surrounding cabinetry proportions, any media wall, and the height of shelving either side can then be drawn to work with that feature, framing it in the same way the fireplace itself is framed, rather than competing with it for attention.

What materials do you use closest to the fire itself?
Within the permitted clearance of a working fire, materials and adhesives are chosen primarily for their tolerance of sustained warmth rather than for appearance alone, since a finish that looks identical to one used elsewhere in the room may not perform the same way at close range to a heat source. This selection is factored into the design at the same time as the clearance distance itself, not treated as a separate decision made later.
Do you match the cabinetry finish to an existing stone or tile hearth?
We can select a cabinetry finish that sits well alongside an existing stone or tile hearth, and coordinate the junction where the two meet so it reads as a considered detail rather than two unrelated materials placed side by side. Supplying or fitting the hearth material itself falls outside what we do, so that element is arranged with the specialist who fitted or is fitting the fireplace, with our design working around their finished dimensions.
Is it safe to fit ventilated cabinetry for AV equipment near a fireplace?
Ventilated equipment housing can be positioned near a fireplace, provided it sits outside the fire's own required clearance zone and is designed so the equipment's own heat can escape freely rather than building up inside a closed cabinet. Amplifiers and set-top boxes generate warmth of their own, which matters more in a spot already close to a second heat source, so both are considered together at the design stage rather than one being an afterthought.

Installation

Will fitting affect the fireplace, flue or gas supply?
Our work is limited to the furniture built around the fireplace, not the fireplace itself. Any alteration to the fire, its flue or a gas supply needs to be carried out by an appropriately qualified specialist, ideally before we measure and fit, so the surrounding cabinetry is designed and installed to the finished dimensions of the fireplace rather than to a fitting that is still to be completed by someone else.
How long does fitting take for a fireplace media wall?
This depends on the scale of the wall, whether it spans the full width of the chimney breast, and how much cabling and equipment routing has to be concealed within the cabinetry, since a media wall with hidden connections behind the screen takes longer to fit than a straightforward pair of alcove cupboards either side. We provide a specific estimate once the design is agreed and the equipment involved is known.

Practical

Can gas fire controls or a flue access panel remain reachable once the furniture is fitted?
Any control, vent or flue access point the fireplace relies on is identified during the design visit, and the cabinetry is planned to either leave that section clear or give it its own small access panel. This means the household can continue to operate, service and maintain the fire exactly as before, without needing to remove or damage the surrounding furniture to reach a control that was already in regular use.
Do you supply or fit the fireplace, stove or surround itself?
We design and fit the furniture around a fireplace that is already in place, or that a specialist is fitting separately. The fireplace, stove or surround itself should be supplied and installed by the appropriate tradesperson, since this falls outside what we do, and our furniture is then designed and built to work alongside their finished fireplace rather than as part of the same piece of work.

What affects the cost of furniture built around a fireplace?
Cost depends on how much of the wall the composition covers, whether a media wall or television integration forms part of it, the materials and finish you choose, and how much scribing to the hearth and chimney breast the room's condition requires. A precise figure only follows the design stage, once the drawings reflect your specific fireplace, and you can begin that conversation through the contact page.
When should I involve you if the fireplace itself is also being replaced?
It helps to involve us once the new fireplace has been chosen, or at least once its dimensions and required clearances are known, since the surrounding cabinetry is designed around those specific figures rather than an assumed average. Bringing us in at that stage, rather than after the fireplace is already installed, lets the two decisions inform each other and avoids the furniture being squeezed in as an afterthought around a finished fireplace.

It is made at our workshop in Derbyshire and delivered for fitting on site, where the final scribing to the hearth, chimney breast and any mantel takes place. Building the carcasses under workshop conditions allows the ventilated sections, cable routes and heat-tolerant panels the design calls for to be prepared accurately, with the close fit against the room's actual fireplace only finished once the furniture is in position.
